The surface finish capabilities for metal 3D printers have improved drastically over the last few years. However, additional processing may be required in certain applications. So, how do you know which process to use? And, what are you trying to accomplish with the treatment?

There are several reasons why you might need a higher quality surface finish. Some applications include a mating surface that drives a higher finish to ensure a quality seal. Some applications call out a surface finish merely because it was called out historically and never challenged or changed. One of the more interesting reasons revolves around the correlation between surface finish and fatigue life.
