Hermeus is an Atlanta-based startup whose mission is to radically accelerate air travel by developing Mach 5 aircraft. That’s five times the speed of sound and more than twice the speed of the supersonic Concorde. With Mach 5 aircraft, passengers would be able to cross the Atlantic in just 90 minutes.
On this week’s episode, I chat with AJ about his company’s mission to connect people faster and bring much needed innovation to commercial flight.
I ask AJ about the design of Hermeus’ revolutionary Chimera engine. A hybrid, full-scale turbine-based combined cycle (TBCC) engine that will power the company’s first aircraft, Quarterhorse, to 90,000+ feet and speeds exceeding 3,000 mph.

He also shared his views on the importance of investing in marketing and the art of storytelling. AJ talks about why it’s so critical for startups to tell their story well; not just from an investment point of view but to help better engage with customers and recruit top talent.
We also talk about the role of additive manufacturing (AM) including how he evaluates current AM technology and how the technology has impacted the work that he’s doing.
For example, AJ recalls some of the very first engines he worked on and how AM was a huge enabler to not only secure funding but iterate and go from design to real-world testing quickly and efficiently.
AJ also shares his predictions for the future of additive and how he sees the technology evolving over time to include larger build volumes and faster print times.
