Elementum 3D specializes in the creation of advanced metals, composites, and ceramics that help support additive manufacturing processes. Since its founding in 2014, the company has become a leader in metal alloy AM powder research, material, and process development.
On this week’s episode, I chat with Jacob about the role his extensive education has played (he holds a BS, MS, and PhD from the Colorado School of Mines) in founding Elementum 3D and the company’s unique merging of powder material science.
Jacob and I discuss his company’s unique and patented Reactive Additive Manufacturing (RAM) technology, which gives manufacturers more printable options for metal composites.
We also delve a bit into additive manufacturing, where Jacob shares that it was his early work with stir casting that inspired him to investigate 3D metal printing. Of course, I also ask him about his predictions for the future of the AM industry and where he sees the most exciting developments happening.
Jacob talks about his undergraduate experience, specifically his work on NASA’s Mars return contingency plan, what it was like “protecting Earth from Martians”, and how that impacted his latest achievements, including his company’s recent DARPA contract.
